Shwe Inthein Stupa Complex, Myanmar

Shwe Inthein is a collection of over 1000 stupas dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, with the earliest inscriptions dating to the 14th century. The stupas cover a low hill behind Inthein village, which sits along the banks of a canal off of Inle Lake. You reach this site via boat from Inle Lake (post coming soon!).

Many of the stupas are in a state of decay, but a good number of them near the top of the hill have been restored by the Myanmar people. The site is believed to date back to the third century BC, when an Indian emperor sent monks to spread Buddhism.

What an amazing site! I'll let the pictures do the talking.
