Aliwal Shoal Diving

In addition to the shark dive we did, Paul and I did an additional four dives at Aliwal Shoal. Our first dive was on a Norwegian ship, named Produce, that had hit the shoal in 1974, drifted a bit and then sunk. The ship was carrying molasses, strangely enough!

The ship was 119m long. She is now sitting on the sandy shoal at about at about 30m deep (98 feet), resting on her side. The wreck is in two different pieces about 30m apart.

It was a great dive, the current was pretty strong, but when we ducked behind a piece of the wreck we could relax and check things out a bit without being swept away. In addition to the wreck dive we did three additional reef dives. Aliwal shoal doesn't have soft corals, but has very interesting underwater terrain. A lot of pinnacles and rock formations for some large animals to live.

Aliwal is an awesome place to dive! It's not an easy place to dive though, very strong underwater currents and the surface is usually extremely rough. But if you are a strong diver I highly recommend it!
